How is a monastery managed? To what extent can the Hegne Monastery be compared to a medium-sized company, and how was a successful change process implemented there? How can a values-based leadership and corporate culture be fostered?
In an interview with Dr. Stefanie Schulte-Hinsken, Sr. Benedicta-Maria Kramer and Thomas Scherrieb answer these and many other questions, while also sharing their own personal experiences and insights into leadership at Hegne Abbey. This understanding is based on four values derived from the convent’s Christian culture of values and forms part of the “Hegne Values Compass for Leadership and Teamwork”: cooperation, openness, trust, and responsibility.
It’s definitely worth watching the video. Sr. Benedicta-Maria and Mr. Scherrieb offer a personal yet comprehensive perspective on the history, developments, and future of Hegne Abbey, the Hegne Abbey Foundation, and all of its affiliated organizations.

About the interviewees:
Dr.-Ing. Stefanie Schulte-Hinsken, with her many years of experience as an executive in industry, is exactly the right person to ask the two members of the foundation’s board—Sr. Benedicta-Maria and Thomas Scherrieb—some challenging questions on the topic of leadership. Among other things, she was responsible for quality management at a global company, and today, as an independent consultant, she helps companies establish quality management systems, shares her expertise as a trainer, and mentors working women as a coach. In her conversation with Sr. Benedicta-Maria Kramer and Thomas Scherrieb, Dr. Schulte-Hinsken delves into the world of monasteries and business—a landscape with its own unique structure and special spirit.
After more than 10 years leading the Hegne Convent, Sr. Benedicta-Maria Kramer is a knowledgeable resource on the topic of leadership. Among other responsibilities, she oversaw more than 250 sisters and 300 staff members and looks back on a 125-year history of success. Today, Sr. Benedicta-Maria serves on the board of the Hegne Monastery Foundation and is specifically responsible for fostering a corporate culture grounded in values and focused on the future.
Thomas Scherrieb is responsible for the numbers, data, and facts. Today, he views many aspects of corporate management differently than he did before his first day on the job at the monastery 23 years ago. As administrative director, he oversees the monastery’s financial affairs, helped establish the Hegne Monastery Foundation, and is committed to its further development as a member of the foundation’s board. What makes Hegne Monastery such an interesting employer for him? Working alongside a community of nuns who, with dedication and purpose, have established a hotel, a nursing home for the elderly, and various educational institutions—such as the Marianum and the Theodosius Academy—and who are constantly developing these institutions to ensure they have a bright and secure future.
