“A Color Lives Within Me!”
Art Brut—Contemporary Perspectives in Drawing, Sculpture, and Painting”
Under this theme, twelve artists from the painting workshop at the Neuland Workshops of the Zieglerschen are presenting their unique works.
The exhibition marked the debut of the new art curatorial board at Hegne Abbey, and judging by the number of visitors at the opening, it was a great success. The lobby of the Hotel St. Elisabeth was packed to capacity; some people could only find a spot to stand.
The guests were treated to the jazzy sounds of the Gypsy Jazz Trio “Die Drahtzieher,” whose lively performance provided a vibrant backdrop for the exhibition opening. Prof. Dr. Florian Kluger, managing director of the monastery and chairman of the Hegne Monastery Foundation, welcomed those in attendance, particularly the artists, the musicians, and Silke Leopold, director of the painting studio in Wilhelmsdorf.
The artists live in group homes for people with disabilities. As a token of appreciation and recognition of their artistic achievements, each of them received a rose at the beginning of the event, which made them easily recognizable among the guests.
Ms. Leopold introduced the exhibition. She began by presenting “Art Brut” as a distinctive form of artistic expression. The works on display offer individual and unique perspectives on inner and outer worlds: some are strident, vibrantly colored, and large-scale; others are delicate, intricate, and sensitive. These are stories of the social and private spheres—but above all, deeply human stories—that find their way through layers of traces and lines, creating a colorful path across enigmatic surfaces.
In a very touching and personal way, Ms. Leopold then shared a few “behind-the-scenes” insights. She spoke about the artists’ highly individual creative approaches, as well as their personal motivations and preferred subjects. In doing so, she also brought the creative process behind these powerful and deeply authentic works to life. Since some of the artists present are deaf, a staff member from the institution translated the introduction into sign language.
In closing, Mr. Kluger expressed his gratitude to Ms. Leopold and invited everyone to visit the exhibition, meet the artists behind the works, and engage in conversation with one another. The group’s walk to the artworks and the refreshment buffet was accompanied by the music of the “Drahtzieher.”
The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through February 21, 2025, at the Hotel St. Elisabeth at Hegne Abbey .
